AllWays Health Partners Launches Proven Diabetes Prevention Program

(SOMERVILLE, MA) AllWays Health Partners today announced a new program for members that was developed by the Massachusetts General Hospital Diabetes Center and is designed to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.

The program called “Path to Lifestyle Change” will be offered at no additional out-of-pocket cost to AllWays members who have been identified as being at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the most serious form of the disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as one in four individuals with diabetes are unaware they have it. The goal of Path to Lifestyle Change is to help at-risk patients reduce their weight by seven percent and increase their minimum time spent exercising to 150 minutes per week. These goals are consistent with the CDC’s benchmarks for weight control and exercise, which research has shown reduce the risk for developing type 2 diabetes by nearly 60 percent for adults and more than 70 percent for patients 60 and older.

Lifestyle coaches from MGH will help patients improve their diet and exercise regimens using an MGH curriculum. Information and resources will be given to patients during virtual group sessions helping to maintain momentum and make lasting lifestyle changes. Throughout the program, patients will stay in contact with dietitian lifestyle interventionists who monitor progress, motivate patient success, recommend interventions by clinicians when needed, and suggest other healthy lifestyle resources available through Partners HealthCare and AllWays.

“We are excited to work together with AllWays Health Partners to offer this proven lifestyle program that will directly impact the health of people at risk for diabetes,” said Linda Delahanty, MS, RD, Director of Nutrition and Behavioral Research at the MGH Diabetes Center who will direct the program.

The approach in the program has been proven to be effective. A randomized, controlled clinical trial showed that completing this lifestyle change program reduced program participants’ chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for individuals aged 60 and older), nearly twice as much as the reduction among the group taking metformin (31%), a drug commonly used for diabetes management.

“The Path to Lifestyle Change is the latest collaboration between Partners and AllWays designed to promote healthy living habits,” said Dr. Tony Dodek, Chief Medical Officer for AllWays Health Partners. “We are employing proven strategies that will have a real and positive impact on the quality of life of our members by helping to prevent potential diseases.”

Together, Partners HealthCare and AllWays are working to improve health outcomes, lower health care costs, and speed the detection of potentially serious conditions. In addition to the Path to Lifestyle Change, another joint program is iHeart Champion, a remote medical management approach from Brigham Health that helps high-risk patients reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke.
